Room 1 Technology - Treasure Boxes

Our technology challenge was to design a suitable package to protect our prayer stones. First we brainstormed our ideas. We talked about which packaging would be our best option and why. We decided that a cardboard box would be suitable to hold our precious taonga.

Our next step was to find a suitable template. We experimented with some templates found on the internet. Folding the boxes was a real challenge, but we worked together to get them done. When we found the right template, we had to take it home and our Mums and Dads helped us to scale it on to a piece of cardboard.

When our cardboard boxes were finished, we gave them two coats of paint and waited for them to dry before we could decorate them.

We had to draft our designs onto a piece of scrap paper and think about the colours that we could use to make our work stand out. We shared our ideas with a buddy and got some feedback about how we could improve our design.

We used pastels to transfer our ideas onto our treasure boxes. Then we put shredded paper inside our boxes to sit our prayer stones on. We were pretty pleased with our final result ...

PRAYER STONES - OUR TAONGA

As part of our learning about Taonga / Treasure, we made prayer stones in Room 1. Prayer stones help us to focus on being at peace with God during prayer time.

The object of this task was to create a taonga or treasure to give to somebody special, in the hope that our prayer stones will become a taonga to them.

We started with a plain stone. Then we had to choose a colour to paint our stone. Our next task was to think about what to put on our stone ... and we came up with many wonderful words that remind us of God and Jesus - love, peace, hope, trust, joy, care, manaaki, aroha.

Finally, we used stickers and craft bits and pieces to decorate our stones.

The results are amazing ...

Our Dads ... Our Taonga - Room 1

What Is A Dad?

A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail...

(unknown)

Thank you God for all Dads everywhere
HAPPY FATHERS DAY!

Our Church's Holy Objects and Taonga

For the first half of this Term we are learning about Holiness in Religious Education.

Recently our Junior classes have been visiting our Church to find out all about the Holy objects and Taonga that belong there.
This week Father John showed Rooms 1, 2, 5, and 6 all of these very special objects. We learnt some of their names and what they were used for.

Thank you Father John for giving up your time to show us these treasures.

Here is a slideshow of our visit and some of these precious objects.

Room 2: Our Family Taonga / Treasures.

Recently in Room 2 we have been talking and writing about our Family Treasures or 'Taonga'.

A family treasure is anything that is special to our whole family. It will have a story about it and it may hold memories of people who we love. It can be something old that has been passed down to us from our parents or grandparents. Or it could be something special that has been given to our family recently, and that we may even pass on to our children and grandchildren.

The children have been bringing in these treasures on their News Day to share with the others in the class. It is so interesting seeing these Taonga and hearing the stories attached to them. Everyone brought something in to share and talk about.

Thank you so much families for entrusting your treasures to us, so that we can get an understanding of what treasures, or Taonga, are.

Here are slideshows showing each child, their treasure, and a short story about it.
Enjoy.

Room 5 have been learning about the Holy Spirit and change. We performed an experiment on changing colours with milk and water, it was amazing to see what happened.

Room 4 planted some cress seeds. Would you believe that the seeds germinated in ONE DAY!
We worked with God to grow food to eat. Thank you, God.

Room 3

We are lucky in Room 3 to have Jay-mi visit from Room 4 and he and Blake created this amazing building today. They are so proud. And rightly so. It took them half an hour and the other children were very impressed.

HOCKEY FUN - Room 1

Wow! It's been a really busy term so far and on Monday, 30th May, Room 1 were at it again, out on the sports field and having a great time.

This time it was a totally different ball game, with a new set of rules ... NO HANDS AND NO FEET ON BALL!!!

Hockey was the name of this game and boy did we have fun. Our coaches, Bevan and Mac were awesome and taught us some great skills. It didn't take long for us to get the hang of what we had to do and in no time at all, we were pushing, trapping, dribbling and tearing up and down the hockey turf with our sticks and hockey ball.

Check it out ...

SOCCER SKILLS - Room 1

Room 1 were the first out of the blocks for soccer skills with Owen on Monday, 9th May and we had a ball!!

Number one rule ... NO HANDS! FEET ONLY - that's why it's called football!

It took us a while to warm up but once we got into it, there was no stopping us. First, Owen put us into teams and we had to put on different coloured training singlets. We told Owen they were too big ... Owen told us we were just too small. Then we grabbed a ball each and practiced dribbling with both feet, keeping our heads up so we could see where we were going, and moving into space.

The games were really cool too. We played Stuck in the Mud and Owen was the Monster Muncher. Every time he trapped our ball, we had to stop and put the ball on top of our head and stand still. We could only move when a team mate came along and kicked a ball through our legs. Our last game was Rob the Nest. That was alot of fun. All in all, we had a fantastic morning and Whaea Jacqui was really happy because everybody had a go!
